You scroll back through a conversation from two weeks ago and suddenly see exactly where it went sideways. It wasn't what the other person said. It was one line of yours: you wrote "sure, whatever works," when what you meant was "this doesn't work for me." Or it goes the other way: an argument that has dragged on since late October suddenly boils down to one sentence, and you realise you were never arguing about the thing you thought you were.
It can look like this. A colleague asks about the deadline for the third time, and it finally lands: in October you gave one date and they heard another. A friend goes quiet after your message, and for the first time you hear how it reads from the outside. You sit down to write a long email explaining yourself, and it comes out as two lines, because now you actually know what you want to say.
On 4 November 2026 the Sun is conjunct Mercury at 12°10′ Scorpio. A conjunction is when two planets appear at the same point in the sky as seen from Earth. Mercury (thinking, words, agreements) is currently retrograde: from 24 October to 13 November it looks as if it's moving backwards. The meeting with the Sun falls right in the middle of that stretch.
The short version. The midpoint of Mercury retrograde is the day you can see what exactly got tangled. The next nine days are for fixing it; anything new can wait until after 13 November.
The main theme: hearing what you actually said
In a chart, the Sun is you: what you choose and where you put your energy. Mercury is how you think and speak. When the two meet, thought and intention line up for a while. You can hear what you mean to say, not just what has already come out of your mouth.
During a Mercury retrograde this is especially noticeable. Since late October, words have been coming back around: old topics, half-finished conversations, agreements that quietly came apart. The first half of the period is for all of that to surface. The meeting with the Sun is when what surfaced starts to make sense as a whole. The second half, up to 13 November, is for calmly fixing what you now see.
If Mercury retrograde has so far meant nothing more than crossed wires in your messages, this is the point where the crossed wires get an explanation. How the whole period works (the shadow, the stations, what tends to come up) is covered in Mercury retrograde 2026. This piece is only about its midpoint.
Why this one is different
The Sun and Mercury meet about six times a year, because Mercury never strays more than 28° from the Sun. But those meetings come in two kinds.
In one, Mercury is behind the Sun, on the far side of its orbit. It's moving forward, and the meeting passes almost unnoticed. In the other, the one happening now, Mercury passes between the Earth and the Sun. That only happens in the middle of its backward phase. Astrologers count a new Mercury cycle from this day; the next meeting of this kind is on 18 February 2027.
What cazimi means
Traditional astrologers had a word for this moment: cazimi, from an Arabic phrase meaning "in the heart of the Sun." It described Mercury sitting tight against the Sun, within 17 arcminutes, which is about half the width of the Sun's visible disc. The belief was that in those hours the Sun doesn't weaken Mercury but strengthens it: the mind is clear and the whole decision is in view.
On 4 November Mercury stays in that zone for a few hours. The practical takeaway is simple: the conversation you've been putting off is easier to have on this day or just after it, rather than before. There's nothing magical about it. It's just a useful point in the cycle: everything that surfaced is on the table, and nothing has been decided yet.
The week Mercury disappears
From roughly 31 October to 8 November, Mercury is so close to the Sun that you can't see it in the sky; it's lost in the glare. Traditional astrologers called this state combust. It sounds alarming, but the meaning is down to earth: it's hard to see your own thinking from the outside. You're sure you explained it clearly, and the other person took it another way. So these are good days to check: "What did you hear me say?"
You can't see the conjunction itself either. Mercury passes just below the Sun rather than across its face. The next transit of Mercury, when it crosses the solar disc and can be seen through a telescope, isn't until 13 November 2032.
After it turns direct on 13 November, Mercury pulls out of the Sun's glare and shows up in the morning sky. From about 15 November to the end of the month you can find it low in the east-southeast, roughly forty minutes before sunrise. It reaches its greatest distance from the Sun on 21 November. It was an evening star; now it's a morning one. That's a good picture of what happens to your words, too: from "finish the old conversation" to "say the new thing."
How it might feel
- You reread an old message and hear a tone in it you never noticed before.
- A week-long argument comes down to one question, and you ask it.
- It becomes clear which part of an October agreement needs redoing and which part can stay.
- You don't want to explain at length; you want to say one precise sentence.
- Or the opposite: your head is quiet and the thought won't come together. That's normal too. Sometimes clarity arrives a day or two later, once Mercury has moved away from the Sun.
On the same day, Venus, also retrograde until 14 November, makes an easy angle to Jupiter. If what becomes clear has to do with relationships or money, this week gives you some backing to settle it on good terms. More in the weekly horoscope for 2–8 November.
Sun conjunct Mercury for each sign
Below is the house of your solar chart where the Sun and Mercury meet. A solar chart treats your Sun sign as the 1st house. That area of life is where, on 4 November, it becomes clear what went wrong in October. If you know your rising sign, read that one as well; it usually gives a sharper picture (more in Sun, Moon and Rising).
Aries: you can see who owes what
8th house: shared money, debt, trust. You can see the spot in a joint budget or a shared project where you and someone else understood things differently. Sort it out with numbers rather than grievances, and put what you agree in writing.
Taurus: your partner finally says it straight
7th house: partnerships and contracts. The meeting happens opposite your sign, so the clarity comes through another person: they explain what the October agreement meant to them. Hear them out before you push back. If you were born around 1–3 May, you'll feel this more.
Gemini: you can see where your schedule slipped
6th house: work, routine, health. Mercury is your planet, so the middle of its backward phase is a day for clearing the backlog: which task is stuck because the brief was vague, which deadline was set by guesswork. Rewrite the plan, but hold off on big new commitments.
Cancer: you know what you want from a romance or a project
5th house: love, creativity, children. You see what you really feel about a person, or about something you once started and dropped. You don't have to announce a decision. Naming it honestly to yourself is enough.
Leo: at home, the real argument comes out
4th house: home and family. The row with your family or flatmates turns out not to be about the dishes or the money, but about nobody asking you. If you were born around 3–5 August, it's tenser: the Sun and Mercury are at a right angle to your Sun. Keep your voice level and take one issue at a time.
Virgo: the message you've been putting off takes shape
3rd house: messages, the people around you, siblings. Mercury is your planet too. The words come for a conversation you've been carrying around for a month. Draft it on the 4th, then send it the next day after reading it again in the morning.
Libra: you can see where the money goes
2nd house: your own money and your sense of your own worth. You spot the subscription you forgot to cancel, the bill that doesn't add up, or the job you quoted too low for. Venus, your planet, is retrograde as well, so check every figure twice. More on money in the chart in the 2nd house in astrology.
Scorpio: you realise what you think of yourself
1st house: you. The meeting happens in your sign, which makes it the most personal version: it becomes clear what you decided about yourself a while ago and never said out loud. If you were born around 3–5 November, it's your birthday, and Mercury meets the Sun almost on the degree of your own Sun, so the year starts with a clear thought about yourself. Write it down; telling everyone can wait until after 13 November.
Sagittarius: the inner monologue starts to make sense
12th house: what isn't on show — tiredness, dreams, the thoughts you don't say out loud. You figure out what exactly keeps you up at night. Tell a journal or someone close to you, and the thought will stop going round in circles.
Capricorn: you see who's really in your corner
11th house: friends, communities, plans for the future. In a group chat or a work channel, it becomes clear who you can actually lean on and who was just agreeing to be polite. Don't draw conclusions that same evening. Sleep on it.
Aquarius: it's clear what went wrong at work
10th house: career and reputation. A report, a project or a conversation with your manager that stalled in October shows you why. If you were born around 31 January – 2 February, it's tenser: this is a square (a 90° angle) to your Sun. Fix what you can, but save any big announcements for the second half of November.
Pisces: you know whether you still want that course or trip
9th house: study, travel, people far away. A course, an application, a move, or a conversation with someone abroad: you see whether you still want it or are just holding on out of habit. Check your travel documents before 13 November.
What to look for in your natal chart
Your Sun sign gives a rough idea; your natal chart gives the precise one, and for that you need your date, time and place of birth. If you haven't looked at yours yet, start with the guide on how to read your natal chart.
The house that holds 12° Scorpio
Find 12° Scorpio in your chart and see which house it falls in. That area of life is where October's muddle clears up on 4 November.
Planets at 11°–13° Scorpio, Taurus, Leo or Aquarius
A planet at 11°–13° Scorpio: the Sun and Mercury meet right on top of it, and whatever that planet stands for comes into sharpest focus. At 11°–13° Taurus, it's an opposition (180°): clarity comes through other people. At 11°–13° Leo or Aquarius, it's a square (90°): the clarity is there, but it comes with friction. What these angles mean is explained in aspects in the natal chart.
The contact is strongest if the planet at those degrees is your Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars or Saturn, or if your rising sign is there.
Your natal Mercury
If you were born with Mercury in Scorpio, this period puts your whole way of thinking and speaking under review. If you were born with Mercury right next to the Sun, days like this will feel familiar: your thinking and your identity are fused, and it helps to tell "they disagree with me" apart from "they disagree with the idea." More in conjunctions in the natal chart.
What to do
- Reread your messages and agreements from late October and mark where you and the other person understood things differently.
- Have the conversation you've been putting off on 4–5 November or in the days right after. One way to start: "I think I've worked out where we got our wires crossed."
- Ask "what did you hear me say?", especially before 8 November.
- Write down the thought that comes to you on this day, even if it's too early to say it out loud.
- Fix what you've found before 13 November: corrections to documents, clarified deadlines, apologies.
What to avoid
- Signing new long-term contracts before 13 November if the date can move.
- Mistaking clarity for a final decision. On the 4th you see the problem; the way out is still being worked on until the end of November.
- Announcing big changes to everyone straight away. Try the idea on one person first.
- Assuming "the retrograde will ruin everything." The meeting with the Sun is the most useful point of the whole period.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Sun conjunct Mercury on 4 November 2026 mean?
Mercury passes between the Earth and the Sun at 12°10′ Scorpio. It's the midpoint of its retrograde: what has been tangled in words and agreements since late October comes together into a clear picture. It's a day for spotting the mistake, not for signing something new.
What is cazimi?
It's the traditional term for a planet sitting right against the Sun, within 17 arcminutes. The word means "in the heart of the Sun." In those hours Mercury was thought to be strengthened rather than weakened, giving unusual clarity. On 4 November Mercury is cazimi for a few hours.
Is a combust Mercury dangerous?
No. "Combust" is the old name for Mercury when it's within roughly 8° of the Sun and can't be seen in its light. This time that's from about 31 October to 8 November. In everyday terms it means just one thing: it's hard to judge your own thinking from the outside, so it's worth checking how you came across.
Can I start something new on 4 November?
Better to wait. Mercury is retrograde until 13 November and Venus until the 14th. The 4th is a day for working out what to fix. New things are easier to launch in the second half of November, and the most important ones after 30 November, when Mercury leaves its shadow.
Who feels the Sun–Mercury conjunction most?
People born around 3–5 November, because the Sun and Mercury meet almost on the degree of their Sun. Also anyone with the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or Mercury at 11°–13° Scorpio, Taurus, Leo or Aquarius, plus Geminis and Virgos, since Mercury is their planet.
How does this connect to the New Moon on 9 November?
The New Moon at about 17° Scorpio opens a new lunar cycle, but Mercury is still moving backwards that day. So use the New Moon to set an intention rather than to launch: write down what you want to begin, and take the first step after 13 November.
Which house holds 12° Scorpio for you, and which of your planets this conjunction touches, shows up in your natal chart in Eira. All it needs is your date, time and place of birth.
