Someone tells you about their weekend, and you're not hearing about the weekend. You're hearing the half-second before the word "fine," and the fact that one name never comes up. And you can't pretend you missed it.
Or this: you meant to ask "how's it going?" and what comes out is "okay, what actually happened?" You're surprised how blunt it sounded. And instead of laughing it off, the other person tells you the truth.
Or it's the third night in a row you've been scrolling back through an old chat, looking for the exact moment things went wrong. Not out of jealousy, not out of boredom. You just suddenly need to understand how it works.
From 30 September, Mercury is moving through Scorpio. In a birth chart, Mercury is the way you think, talk and ask questions. Scorpio has no interest in the surface; it wants whatever is underneath. While the two are together, your mind points in a different direction. Not "what did they say?" but "why did they say it like that, and what did they leave out?"
What changes while Mercury is in Scorpio
You hear what isn't said. This is the defining feature of the weeks ahead. Tone, pauses, the word someone carefully steps around: you pick all of that up faster than the words themselves. Sometimes it saves you from a mistake, because you realize in time that "everything's fine" means the opposite. Sometimes it wears you out, because there's no off switch.
Small talk stops working. Chatting about the weather or asking "how've you been?" starts to feel like a waste of time. You want to either talk about something real or not talk at all. So you'll probably have fewer conversations over these weeks, and more of the kind that change a relationship for good, one way or the other.
Questions get direct. Not "maybe we should talk about it sometime" but "are you lying to me?" Not "how are things with money?" but "how much do we owe, exactly?" Scorpio has no patience for hints, and neither does Mercury while it's here. The directness isn't rudeness. You genuinely need the answer, not the polite version of it.
You want to get to the bottom of things. The cause of a health issue, your family's history, the clause in the contract everyone signed without reading, the reason you've been angry at the same person for three years. This is the best time of year for research, investigation, therapy, and any work that means going all the way down rather than skimming.
Suspicion creeps in. It's the flip side of the same depth. Once you get used to looking for the second meaning, you start finding it where there isn't one. A message without an emoji reads as cold; a slow reply reads as a decision. One question helps you tell instinct from anxiety: do you have a fact, or only a feeling?
Secrets stop keeping. Yours and other people's. Something you've kept to yourself for a long time starts pushing to get out, and saying it becomes easier than holding it in. Someone close to you may also tell you something you didn't know. Mercury in Scorpio doesn't invent secrets; it brings the existing ones into the light.
Why Mercury stays in Scorpio so long this time
Mercury usually spends about three weeks in a sign. This time it turns retrograde while still in Scorpio, so it stays there until 6 December, more than two months in all.
What that means for you: a conversation that starts in October probably won't end in October. It will come back in November with new details, and only at the end of November will it be clear where you've landed. It helps to think of the period in three stretches.
30 September – 24 October: the question. Mercury moves forward. This is the time to ask what you've been putting off, start digging, bring up the awkward subject. The first days are sharp: on 2–3 October a conversation can easily turn into a fight over who gets to decide. Around 7 October Mercury meets Venus, which has just turned retrograde and is barely moving. These are good days to tell someone how you really feel, especially if you've been sitting on it for a while. Venus in Scorpio has its own article.
24 October – 13 November: the return. Mercury moves backward, from 20°58′ to 5°02′ Scorpio. What was said in October comes back up, along with things you found out but never had time to process. It's a good stretch for asking again, rereading, finishing what you left half-written. It's a bad one for signing anything you haven't reread. On 4 November, right in the middle, Mercury lines up with the Sun, and that is usually when the reason all of this surfaced finally becomes clear.
13 November – 6 December: the conclusion. Mercury moves forward again and crosses the same stretch of the sign a second time. Decisions that were hanging in the air in late October can now be made. By 30 November it's back at the point where it turned, and the story that began in October gets its ending.

By sign: which house Mercury in Scorpio falls in
Count from your Sun sign. If you know your rising sign, count from that instead; it's more accurate.
Aries
Eighth house: shared money, debt, intimacy, everything you don't discuss with people you barely know. The big conversations of these weeks are about what ties you to someone more deeply than it looks: a loan, an inheritance, a joint account, trust. Don't sign anything about shared money in a hurry. Ask the question that feels awkward to ask instead.
Taurus
Seventh house: your partner and anyone you're bound to by an agreement. Mercury sits opposite your sign, so the talking shifts to the other person. You'll hear from your partner something they've been thinking for a long time and never said. Your job is to listen to the end before you defend yourself. People born roughly 25 April – 11 May will feel this most.
Gemini
Sixth house: work, routine, health. Mercury is your ruling planet, so for the whole period you'll be thinking about how your days are really set up. It's a good time to get to the root of your tiredness, or to figure out who at work is doing someone else's job. In November, when Mercury goes backward, check work emails and deadlines twice.
Cancer
Fifth house: love, children, creativity, what you do for joy. A flirtation turns serious; a conversation with a child turns honest. A good time to go back to a creative project you dropped and work out why you dropped it.
Leo
Fourth house: home, family, parents. Family stories that used to be told in a lowered voice come back up. You may want to dig into your family's past, or finally talk to your parents about what nobody has mentioned for years. For those born roughly 28 July – 13 August, these talks will be harder: Mercury is at a right angle to their Sun. Mars is in your sign right now, so speak more slowly than you feel like speaking.
Virgo
Third house: speech, messages, study, siblings. Mercury is your ruling planet, and this is your most talkative stretch of the year. Your words land more precisely and more sharply than usual. Great for writing, studying and negotiating. The risk: one line in a text can cut deeper than you meant it to.
Libra
Second house: money and how much you value yourself. After the polite weeks when Mercury was in your sign, you start counting for real: where the money goes, what your work is actually worth. A good time to sort out your finances down to the last cent, not "roughly."
Scorpio
First house: you. Mercury is in your sign for more than two months. Your thinking speeds up, your words get sharper, and it becomes easier to say what you've been carrying around for a long time. Those born roughly 28 October – 13 November will feel it most, because Mercury crosses their Sun three times. Watch your tone: it feels like honesty to you and like harshness to everyone else.
Sagittarius
Twelfth house: what happens behind the scenes. The talking goes inward: lots of thinking, not much saying. Good for journaling, therapy and working alone. What you're quietly learning now will come in handy in December, when Mercury reaches your sign.
Capricorn
Eleventh house: friends, colleagues, plans for the future. You start to see who in your circle is really on your side. An honest conversation with a friend could make the friendship stronger or end it. A good time to rethink your plans for next year.
Aquarius
Tenth house: career, reputation, the people you report to. Your words at work carry more weight than usual, and people listen more closely. Good for a serious conversation about your role or your pay. If you were born roughly 24 January – 9 February, don't let that conversation turn into a power struggle.
Pisces
Ninth house: study, long trips, your outlook on life. You'll want to learn something properly: psychology, history, a legal question. Your mind is after meaning, not just information. A good time to sign up for a course or finally read the book you've been putting off.
How to see this in your own chart
1. The house. Find which house of your birth chart Scorpio falls in. That's where the big conversations will happen until December. If you're not sure how to read houses, start with our guide to reading your natal chart.
2. The degree. Mercury crosses the stretch from 5° to 21° Scorpio three times: forward in October, backward from late October into November, and forward again in November. If you have a planet there, its theme stays on the table for the whole period, not just a single day. Also check 5°–21° Taurus, Leo and Aquarius: planets there get a tense contact of the same strength.
3. Your birthday. Born roughly 28 October – 13 November: Mercury crosses your Sun three times. 25 April – 11 May: it opposes your Sun three times. 28 July – 13 August or 24 January – 9 February: it squares your Sun three times, which means conversations with friction. The dates are approximate, since the Sun shifts by about a day from year to year.
4. Your own Mercury. If your natal Mercury is in Scorpio, these weeks are your home turf: you've always heard what goes unsaid, and now the whole world is tuned the same way. If it's in Taurus, Leo or Aquarius, your usual way of thinking will keep bumping into a different one. That's useful, though not always pleasant.

What to do and what to avoid
Do: ask the question you've been putting off · get to the bottom of documents, debts and shared money · write down important conversations so you have something to reread in November · go to therapy, dig into research, take on any deep work · tell the truth to someone who has deserved it for a long time · check a suspicion against the facts before acting on it.
Avoid: reading someone else's messages, however tempting · turning every conversation into an interrogation · taking silence as an answer · signing anything important between 24 October and 13 November without reading it twice · using something told to you in confidence as ammunition in an argument · deciding you've "figured it all out" from a tone of voice.

Frequently asked questions
How long is Mercury in Scorpio in 2026?
From 30 September to 6 December, more than two months. Mercury usually takes about three weeks to cross a sign, but this time it turns retrograde inside Scorpio, which is why it stays so long.
When is Mercury retrograde in fall 2026?
From 24 October to 13 November. It stays in Scorpio the whole time: it turns back at 20°58′ and resumes forward motion at 5°02′. We've written separately about how retrograde planets work in a birth chart.
Does this only affect Scorpios?
No. Everyone has Scorpio somewhere in their chart; it's one of the houses, one area of life. For Aries it's shared money, for Taurus it's partnership, for Aquarius it's career. Scorpios just get the most personal version, since Mercury is moving through their first house.
Is it safe to sign contracts?
From 30 September to 24 October, yes, and arguably better than usual: you notice the fine print and the hidden conditions. From 24 October to 13 November, be more careful: reread, ask follow-up questions, leave time for revisions. After 13 November it's fine again, especially for things you started discussing in October.
How is Mercury in Scorpio different from Mercury in Libra?
In Libra, your mind tested how a sentence would sound to the other person and looked for agreement. In Scorpio it looks for the truth, even an uncomfortable one, and agreement matters much less. The September version is covered in Mercury in Libra.
I'm a Scorpio and I've been irritable lately. Is that Mercury?
It might be. Mercury in your sign makes your thinking faster and your hearing sharper, and at the same time Mars in Leo is moving through your tenth house and adding impatience at work (what that means). Check what exactly is getting to you. It's usually the conversations you should have had long ago, and Mercury has simply stopped letting you put them off.
Eira builds your birth chart from your date, time and place of birth and shows you which house Scorpio falls in, and which of your planets sit on the stretch Mercury will cross three times.
