Why Exes Text in Autumn: Venus Retrograde 2026

Why exes reach out during Venus retrograde, 3 October – 14 November 2026: how to tell why they are back, whether to reply, and how to find it in your birth chart.

Why Exes Text in Autumn: Venus Retrograde 2026

"Hey. Just came across our photo." A year of silence, and then this. You have been holding your phone for half an hour, and you still don't know whether to reply.

It can look different, too. A friend you drifted away from — no fight, no explanation — asks how you've been. A former boss suggests "coffee, I have an idea." Or nobody writes to you at all: it's you, at 1 a.m., opening the profile of someone you haven't thought about since spring, just to see who they are with now.

From 3 October to 14 November, Venus is retrograde (seen from Earth, she appears to move backwards across the sky). In a birth chart, Venus is what we like, who we choose and what we value. When she moves backwards, those themes come back for review. Below: why exes — and anyone else you never quite finished with — tend to reach out now, how to tell why someone has come back, and how to find this period in your own chart.

The point: it's not fate, it's something left unsaid

An ex doesn't text you because it's "meant to be." Something left unsaid has simply become audible again — for both of you.

So a message from the past is neither a sign nor an invitation. It is a question you once left open, now arriving with a name in the notification. You can answer it in many ways, including not at all. But first it helps to work out what has actually come back: the person, the feeling, or simply the time when you were twenty-five.

For the full picture of this period — what shifts in money, taste and relationships for every sign — see Venus Retrograde 2026: Is It Love or Just Habit?. This article is only about the people from your past.

Why exes get in touch right now

Venus is travelling backwards over the stretch from 8°29′ Scorpio to 22°51′ Libra. Libra is about partnership and fairness; Scorpio is about what you never let go of. That's why the people who resurface are not random acquaintances but those with something unresolved: an unfair breakup, a debt, a grudge, a sentence that never got said.

24 October is the midpoint, when Venus passes between the Earth and the Sun. Around those days an old story comes into sharpest focus — and often looks less flattering than you'd like. On the same day Mercury, the planet of words and messages, turns retrograde too, and until 13 November old chats, drafts and unfinished letters come back into play. More in Mercury in Scorpio 2026.

There's one more detail people rarely mention. Venus retrograde repeats in almost the same degrees every eight years. Last time she moved backwards through Scorpio and Libra from 5 October to 16 November 2018. It is worth thinking back to what was happening in your life that autumn: sometimes the question in front of you now is the same one — just with a different person, or at a different level.

How to check your own chart: three steps

Your Sun sign only gives the general backdrop. Who exactly might get in touch is shown by your natal chart, and for that you need an accurate birth time. If yours is uncertain, here is why birth time matters so much.

Step 1. Find the house that holds late Libra and early Scorpio

The house tells you which part of your life the person is likely to come from:

  • 7th or 5th house — a former partner or an old romance may return.
  • 11th — an old friend, or a group you quietly left.
  • 10th — a former boss, a previous employer, an old client.
  • 6th — a former colleague, or a job that wants you back.
  • 2nd or 8th — someone you still have money matters with: a loan, a joint purchase, property never divided. The 8th house is covered in detail in 8th House in Astrology.
  • 3rd — a sibling, a neighbour, an old message thread.
  • 4th — relatives you haven't spoken to in a while, and old family stories.
  • 9th — people from another city or country, a teacher, studies you dropped.
  • 12th — the person you never tell anyone about.
  • 1st — what comes back is not another person but an earlier version of you: an old style, an old habit, an old way of seeing yourself.

If you're not sure how to find your houses, start with the guide how to read your natal chart.

Step 2. Check the stretch from 22°51′ Libra to 8°29′ Scorpio

If one of your planets sits there, Venus crosses it three times over these months: forward in September and early October, backward until 14 November, and forward again until mid-December. The theme then tends to return in waves: a message, a pause, a second message. By birthday, this stretch corresponds roughly to 16–31 October.

It is felt most strongly if your Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars or Ascendant falls in this range.

Step 3. Look at your natal Venus

If you were born with Venus retrograde, returns like these are familiar to you and tend to feel calmer: you already look back before you choose. How to read this in a chart is covered in retrograde planets in the natal chart. If your natal Venus is in Libra or Scorpio, it is your very way of loving that comes up for review — see Venus in your natal chart.

How to tell why your ex is writing

The first message looks much the same for everyone: "hey," "how are you," "thought of you." The difference shows in what happens next.

They write "just because" and disappear

A like on an old photo, a "happy birthday" after three years of silence, a single message and then nothing. This is a closing, not an opening. Usually they just needed to know you're still around and doing fine. You can answer briefly and kindly — or not at all. Don't wait for a follow-up.

They write with a specific question

"I've wanted to apologise for a long time," "you still have my books," "can we talk about what happened back then." This one deserves a real answer. It is the unfinished business itself, and you have a chance to close it calmly, without slipping back into old roles.

You're the one who wants to write first

The message is typed, your thumb hovering over Send. Ask yourself: do I miss the person, or that time in my life? Quite often it turns out you don't miss them so much as who you were back then — freer, in love, without a mortgage. If so, don't send it: they can't give that back. And if it really is them you miss, wait until morning and read it again.

How to reply to an ex so it becomes a full stop

Reply calmly, and not straight away. A reply can be a full stop rather than a continuation. Say what you didn't say back then — and stop there.

A full stop sounds something like this: "Thanks for writing. It hurt back then; it doesn't now. I'm glad you're doing well." No question at the end, no "maybe we could meet up." A reply like that keeps the door closed without slamming it, and it usually brings more relief than you expect while you're typing it.

If you do want to keep talking, that's fine too. Just don't turn the first message into a decision: Venus retrograde makes the past look brighter than it was, and in memory the fights tend to shrink while the good evenings grow.

Venus retrograde and exes by sign

Who from the past may reach out, by Sun sign. If you know your Ascendant, read that one too — it gives a more precise picture.

Aries

A former partner — and possibly an unsettled money question between you. Keep the two apart: feelings in one conversation, accounts in another.

Taurus

Someone you were with, or almost with, and former colleagues. Venus is your ruling planet, so you'll feel this period more sharply than most.

Gemini

An old romance, a former passion or ex-colleagues. Before replying, ask yourself whether it's the person you're drawn to, or the lightness you felt around them.

Cancer

Family and an old love. A relative you haven't spoken to in years may get in touch, or someone you were in love with a very long time ago.

Leo

Messages and relatives. Old group chats wake up, distant family calls, and a conversation your family usually steps around comes up again.

Virgo

Old messages and old debts. Someone may remember you owe them, or you may remember someone owes you. A good time to settle it without resentment.

Libra

An earlier version of yourself. Venus is your ruling planet, and what returns is less a person than the question of how much you value yourself around others. Exes may write too — notice how you feel after those conversations.

Scorpio

The person you never told anyone about, and an earlier version of you. Don't rush into drastic decisions: in these weeks the past feels closer than it really is.

Sagittarius

Old friends and a secret attachment. Someone you stopped talking to without ever explaining why may reappear.

Capricorn

A former boss, a former team, an old circle. If someone invites you to "come back," listen now and decide after 14 November.

Aquarius

Work and people from far away. A previous employer, a client or an acquaintance from another country may come back. Don't confuse nostalgia with a career opportunity.

Pisces

Someone you had a very deep bond with, and people from other cities. Those returning now may bring the conversation you weren't ready for back then.

What to do

  • Reply calmly and not straight away. Give yourself at least a day.
  • Say what you didn't say back then — and stop there.
  • If the issue is money or belongings, settle it fully, briefly and in writing.
  • Think back to autumn 2018: what was going on in your life, and how did it end?

What to avoid

  • Deciding "we're getting back together" before mid-November. Venus retrograde makes the past look brighter than it was.
  • Late-night texts to an ex "just to see how they are."
  • Checking up, jealousy and scrolling through someone's profile in the evening — it won't give you an answer, only cost you sleep.

If someone has come back and you want to understand what really connects you, look at both charts together — see astrology compatibility and synastry.

Dates: Venus is retrograde from 3 October to 14 November 2026, moves back from Scorpio into Libra on 25 October, and reaches the midpoint on 24 October. Frequently asked questions

Why do exes text during Venus retrograde?

Venus rules attachment, and when she is retrograde she brings attachments back for review. The people most likely to resurface are those you left something unfinished with. A message means the question is still alive — not that the relationship has to restart.

Does it mean we can get back together?

Venus retrograde neither promises nor forbids anything. It shows what is still between you. If you decide to try again, do it after 14 November, when the past stops looking better than it was.

Should I reply if my ex texts me?

If the message has a specific question, yes — answer it properly. If it's "just because," you can reply briefly or not at all. Either way, not straight away and not in the middle of the night.

Can I text my ex first during Venus retrograde?

You can, if you have something real to say and you aren't waiting for a particular reaction. Before you do, ask yourself: do I miss the person, or that time?

When does Venus retrograde end in 2026?

On 14 November 2026, at 22°51′ Libra. The echoes last until mid-December, while Venus crosses the same stretch again, this time moving forward.

Why isn't it only former partners who get in touch?

Because an "old connection" is anyone you still have something unsaid with: a friend, a colleague, a boss, a relative. The house that holds late Libra and early Scorpio in your chart shows which part of life they are likely to come from.
