You deleted the number, but you still know it by heart. You threw the gift away, but you remember exactly which shelf it sat on. Scorpio doesn't lose things — it keeps them. And that is precisely what it ends up paying for.
Maybe you've caught yourself doing something similar lately. Scrolling back through a conversation that ended long ago. Replaying an argument nobody else is still having. Keeping something in the wardrobe that you'd rather not look at — and still not taking it out of the house.
Until 23 October the Sun is still in Libra, yet Scorpio is already switched on: Venus has turned retrograde there, and Mercury is moving through it too. That is why the question "what am I holding on to, and why?" arrives before Scorpio season does.
Below: what to let go of before Scorpio season 2026 begins — how to tell you're holding on to too much, what matters for each sign, and how to find this theme in your own birth chart.
The point: letting go is not forgetting
Letting go isn't forgetting. It's no longer spending your strength on holding on.
That is where the real fear hides. Letting go can feel like betrayal — of who you used to be, of the other person, of being right, of the years you put in. So Scorpio chooses to hold on. Not because it needs to, but because admitting "it's over" feels scarier than carrying the weight a little longer.
Your memory isn't going anywhere. You will still remember the number and the shelf. What changes is that the memory stops costing you your evenings, your mood and your money.
Why this question shows up early
Scorpio season begins on 23 October, but two planets are already at work in the sign.
Venus — the planet of love, money and everything we value — has been retrograde since 3 October: seen from Earth, it appears to move backwards. It turned at 8°29′ Scorpio, and anything tied to feelings, attachment and shared money comes back up for review. How Venus behaved in this sign before the turn is covered in Venus in Scorpio.
Mercury — the planet of thought and speech — has been in Scorpio since 30 September. It makes the mind tenacious: you want to get to the bottom of things, reread, ask again, work out what someone really meant.
Together they create a familiar feeling: the past won't let go until you've made sense of it. Which makes this a good moment to actually make sense of it, rather than just put up with it.
Signs you're holding on to too much
- You check the profile of someone you've already closed the door on. Not to get them back — just to look. And then you spend half the day thinking about what you saw.
- The grudge lost its reason long ago, but you keep retelling it — to yourself. The other person may not even remember. You remember it word for word, tone of voice included.
- You keep paying for something you don't use, so you won't have to admit a mistake. A gym membership, a subscription, instalments on something that didn't fit, a project with too much invested in it to simply shut down.
Scorpio isn't holding on to the thing. It's holding on to control over the story. As long as you hold on, it feels like the ending could still be rewritten.
That is why letting go is so hard. As long as the number hasn't faded from memory, the story keeps an open ending. Letting go means accepting that the ending has already happened — even if you don't like it.
Why Scorpio finds it so hard to let go
Scorpio is the sign of depth and attachment. It doesn't do "a little": when it trusts, it trusts completely; when it's hurt, it stays hurt. Shallow connections don't interest it, so every real one grows deep roots — and pulling it out never comes without pain.
Scorpio is also a fixed sign. It would rather endure discomfort than change. That patience is its strength in a crisis and its trap in everyday life: you can spend years tolerating something that should have ended long ago.
This pattern isn't reserved for people born in late October or November. Everyone has Scorpio somewhere in their chart — and somewhere in it there's a topic you've been holding on to longer than it deserves. That's the next section.
What to let go of: sign by sign
Read your Sun sign, and if you know your rising sign, read that too — it usually gives a sharper picture. How the Sun, Moon and Ascendant fit together is explained in the big three: Sun, Moon and rising.
Aries — other people's money and old debts
Time to work out who owes whom, and how much. A sum you once lent and feel awkward bringing up may resurface — or a debt of your own that's easier not to think about. Say the number out loud, then decide: pay it back, write it off, or settle it in parts.
Taurus — a role you play out of habit
The role you play in your relationship out of habit. The one who always gives in, always organises, always says "it's fine, don't worry". Ask yourself whether you'd choose that role today if you were meeting for the first time.
Gemini — a duty nobody asked for
A duty nobody has asked you to do in a long time. You still do what was once needed: reminding, checking, covering for others. Try skipping it once — and see whether anyone notices.
Cancer — what only lives in memory
A romance or a hobby that only lives on in memory. Paints drying out in a box, thoughts of someone you haven't seen in years. Be honest: either come back to it properly, or let it go and make room for a new kind of joy.
Leo — the family's "this is how we do things"
The family's "this is how we do things". Holidays spent the way others want, rules you never set, relatives' expectations. You don't have to break the tradition — just figure out which part of it you carry because you want to, and which part out of duty.
Virgo — the chat you keep rereading
The conversation you keep rereading. You're looking for the moment it all went wrong and the line you should have said differently. It isn't there. Archive the chat — it won't stop you remembering, but it will make rereading harder.
Libra — the purchase you keep justifying
The expense you keep justifying. You explain to yourself why it's still necessary, and the explanation gets longer every time. That's the giveaway: what you genuinely need doesn't require a defence.
Scorpio — a self-image you've outgrown
A version of yourself you've outgrown. The one who "trusts nobody", "keeps everything inside", "always copes alone". It once protected you; now it may just be in the way. Your season starts on 23 October — it would be good to enter it travelling light.
Sagittarius — a secret that's heavy to carry
A secret that's hard to carry alone. You don't have to tell everyone — one person you trust is enough. Sometimes letting go simply means no longer staying silent.
Capricorn — a friendship kept out of politeness
A friendship kept up out of politeness. Meet-ups that leave you drained, group chats you answer out of obligation. Letting go doesn't mean falling out: you can simply stop holding up something that only stands because of you.
Aquarius — a project kept for status
A job title or project you keep for the status. It sounds impressive and brings no joy. Ask yourself whether you'd stay if nobody else knew about it.
Pisces — a belief you no longer hold
A belief you no longer actually hold. "Love means sacrifice", "money is dirty", "I'm not that lucky". You stopped living by it long ago, yet the phrase still plays in your head. You can let it go the same way you'd let go of an old belonging.
How to find this in your birth chart
- Wherever Scorpio falls in your chart, that's where the thing you're holding on to lives. Scorpio occupies one of the houses of your chart — one area of life — and that house's theme tells you where to look. If there are no planets in it, the theme doesn't disappear; see empty houses in the natal chart.
- If one of your planets sits at 0°–9° Scorpio (by Sun sign, roughly people born 23–31 October), Venus is touching exactly that theme right now. Until 25 October it backs over these degrees towards the Libra border, and later it will cross them again, moving forward.
- Pluto close to your Sun, Moon or Ascendant — letting go is hardest for you, and all the more important. Pluto is considered Scorpio's ruling planet: wherever it is prominent in your chart, the habit of holding on and staying in control runs especially deep.
Your birth date only tells you where the Sun was. Where your Scorpio, Ascendant and Pluto are can only be seen in a full chart, which needs your birth time. If you're just starting out, the guide how to read your natal chart will help.
What to do and what to avoid
⚖️ What to do
- Pick one thing and close it: cancel the subscription, return the item, finish that last message without a question at the end.
- First work out why you're holding on. If the answer is "because then I'd have to admit I was wrong", you're already halfway there.
- Start small. One small thing closed shows you that letting go isn't dangerous.
⛔ What to avoid
- Dramatic "burn it all" rituals. Scorpio lets go once it understands, not once it's angry.
- Texting someone from your past to "get closure" when you're really waiting for a reply.
- Demanding that you let go of everything at once. What held on for years may leave gradually.
Dates (Kyiv time): Venus is retrograde from 3 October (8°29′ Scorpio) to 14 November and moves back into Libra on 25 October; Mercury is in Scorpio from 30 September to 6 December and turns retrograde on 24 October; Scorpio season runs from 23 October to 22 November.
What comes next
On 7 October Mercury catches up with Venus and old feelings find words — more in the weekly horoscope for 5–11 October. On 23 October the Sun enters Scorpio and "what am I holding on to?" becomes everyone's question; on 24 October Mercury turns retrograde, so whatever you've let go of may still check in once more — and that's normal. The whole month is in the October 2026 horoscope.
Frequently asked questions
When does Scorpio season start in 2026?
On 23 October, when the Sun moves from Libra into Scorpio. The season lasts until 22 November. But the sign's themes are already in play: Mercury has been in Scorpio since late September, and Venus turned retrograde there on 3 October.
Does letting go mean forgetting?
No. Letting go means no longer spending your strength on holding on. The memory stays, but it stops taking your time, mood and money. You can remember someone and still stop checking their profile.
Why is it so hard for Scorpios to let go?
Scorpio is a sign of deep attachment and great patience. It isn't holding on to the thing itself but to control over the story: as long as it hasn't let go, it feels like the story can still be rewritten. For Scorpio, letting go means admitting the ending has already happened.
Does this apply if I'm not a Scorpio?
Yes. Everyone has Scorpio somewhere in their chart, linked to a particular area of life — and that's where you keep things out of habit. People with planets in the early degrees of Scorpio will feel this period most strongly.
Should I text my ex now to get closure?
If you want "closure" but are really hoping for a reply, it's better not to. If you have something genuine to say and are ready for any response, send one message with no question at the end. Venus retrograde is good for understanding your feelings and less good for restarting a relationship.
Where Scorpio sits in your chart, which of your planets retrograde Venus is touching and where Pluto is strongest — your natal chart in Eira will show you. All you need is your date, time and place of birth.
